HAVE YOU FOUND THE RIGHT PROM DRESS?

PROM SEASON IS AROUND THE CORNER!

DO YOU HAVE YOUR DRESS?

One of the best days of your life.  A day which is so special, so you have to get it right.  How  exciting to choose the style of dress and the colour.  However, is it a fun, easy exercise or a stressful one!

I wanted to share the dresses that Daisy tried on.  All very different with the styles and colours.. but which one did she choose and which one was right for her shape, colouring and personality?

After speaking with Daisy, she wanted to have a dress that matched her personality.  With her style preference being Classic/Dramatic, she wanted a dress that had the wow factor as well as  some elegance.

Dress No1 – Daisy’s first idea was to have a white wedding dress with gloves and a tiara.

Loving this idea, she chose this one.  Technically it works for her straight body shape, being cut in a straight shape, the dress is a lovely classic shape, the neckline works for her long neck.

Why it doesn’t work – the white colour is a little harsh against her skin tone, the fabric on the lower half has movement, which doesn’t work as Daisy has no curves, but overall, it lacks the wow factor.

Dress No2 – This time we went for colour, this suits her muted skin tone.  Same shape as before, more of an evening look. The fabric is better on Daisy’s straight angular body shape.

It doesn’t have the wow factor and the neckline reduces Daisy’s bust, not very flattering.

Dress No3 – A beautiful dress, the soft pink is a gorgeous colour for Daisy.  Sadly, it doesn’t show in the photo, but the dress has a wonderful shimmer effect, making the dress look expensive. The cut is fuller, making it more wow.  It also has a lovely criss cross shaping at the back looking very sexy.

Again the neck line is not the best and it could be better!

Dress 4 – WOW! WE HAVE THE DRESS!!

It is so true, that when you know you have the dress you know… well we both did!  It is very Daisy, she wanted class, simplicity and drama  What a beautiful dress! Check out those trendy pockets. The neckline is better for Daisy, it gives her a beautiful shape, the grey/blue colour is one of her top colours in her pallet, the fabric is stiffer, matching her straight angular body shape, making the fabric sit better on the body …it has shimmer, class, drama and definitely has the wow factor.  I love the green showing through at the front of the dress.

Watch this space when we have the whole look to show you on the day!

When choosing an outfit, the first thing you need to get right is to ensure the garment represents YOU  If it isn’t you, you won’t like wearing it.  Do you know your style preference?

Colour is so important, having the right colour will make you look radiant, well and sit in harmony with your hair, skin and eye colour.

The FIT is crucial .. if this isn’t right, the dress will look wrong.  Ensure that you know your body shape, proportions, scale and other rules that you can show off or hide if you wish to, to look the best version of you.

How to look good on Valentines day

With Valentines Day just around the corner, it’s time to start prepping the ultimate outfit for your date.  First impressions are everything!

Here are my top tips on how to look good:

  1. Ensure the outfit fits the purpose of the date

Select an outfit that suits the occasion.  If you are going out in the day that is less formal, then wear an outfit that is smart/casual.  If you are going out for an evening meal, then the outfit needs to step up to a more smarter outfit.

Before – my client is wearing an outfit in the day, which is too formal in colour and look. Also the clothes are too baggy.

2. Be yourself

Wear clothes that show off your personality.  Image is a form of communication – let your date see who you truly are.  Do not choose an outfit because it looks good on the mannequin, or seen on someone else, the outfit needs to reflect you.

  1. Make sure the outfit fits well

There is nothing worse than wearing baggy clothes; looking like sloppy joe.  To look good in an outfit, the garments need to skim the body – not too tight or baggy.  Whatever your size, show off your shape.  It also looks like you have bothered.

After – A great outfit that reflects my client’s personality, is modern and a great fit.

  1. Be modern and up to date

Your date will sum you up in seconds.  Ensure that your overall look, including your hair and accessories are modern and up to date.  Examples are: a current hair cut, (no hairspray) modern clothes (not from the 80’s) not forgetting the shoes.

  1. Don’t over do it

There is nothing worse than trying to over do it.  Wearing a white suit, blingy tie, short red dress, showing lots of cleavage, lots of make-up, and covered in perfume is not a good idea.  Your date will be concentrating on what you are wearing (in the wrong way) instead of listening to what you are saying.

After – a great example of an evening outfit. He looks smart, handsome, happy with his lady love. The idea was to slim the top half and shorten his long legs to balance.

  1. Go for kinder colours

Choosing the correct colours for the date is key.  If you want to impress your date, it is not a good idea wearing black from head to toe, or wearing harsh, serious colours.  You want to come across as kind, approachable and trustworthy – so wearing softer colours like pink, lilac and grey (if you are cool) and off white, aqua and natural colours (if you are warm) will make a massive difference.

  1. Make an effort

Impress your date and think of the basics.  I know it sounds silly, but not a lot of people think of little things like: having a shower, washing hair, blow drying and putting some product in to finish off your style. Wearing clean clothes that are pressed and pristine.  Smooth skin with applying a moisturiser and light perfume.

  1. Smile and be confident

Stand up tall, look confident and smile.  Look at your date in the eye and give them a big happy smile.  It’s easy and makes a massive difference.  You might be shaking inside, but learning how to calm your body down, breathe and relax will help.  Most of all, enjoy your time together and have fun.

Make 2019 the year of change – New Year New You

New Year New You – do you really want another year of dealing with those horrible, anxious feelings when you have to face the task to clear out your wardrobe, knowing what to wear and how to put it together?

Feeling sick, having to look at the shops online and in the high street trying to choose the perfect outfit that makes you feel good and confident but not knowing where to start or what to do?

To have the confidence to be able to do this, is very hard.  We all have too many clothes in our wardrobes and there is so much choice in the shops – without the knowledge, it is pretty impossible!  It also doesn’t help with how we feel about ourselves – how are we going to look good if we don’t feel confident with our bodies and who we are.

After listening to so many of my clients, I feel this stems from childhood.  I am sure you remember other children looking attractive, having the perfect hair, make-up and being the coolest kid on the block.  The older we get, this stays with us and niggles away at the back of our heads, coming back with vengeance in certain situations, making us feel that we want to crawl in a ball and disappear.

However, as a young child, we need to remember that we were never taught the basics in self-care, what hair style suits us, understanding our bodies or our unique colouring – nothing about our DNA!  We should not expect to know the knowledge of image.

To be able to project ourselves in a positive way for people to take us seriously, to like and trust us – we have to go out there and let others see that we look the business, but most importantly, feel confident inside!!

To be the best we can in our personal and professional life is knowing our talent and being unique inside and out.

To not let these niggly excuses get in the way of others seeing how wonderful we really are.  We all feel the same in wishing we could look better – but showing off our assets and looking amazing, opens up a huge exciting world.

Results from a few of my clients…

“Thank you for your consultation with me.  You were so sensitive and encouraging.  I think you have a real gift for the work you do, helping each of us re-kindle confidence and enthusiasm in what can be a vulnerable area of our lives, often kept very private.

Thank you for helping to re-awaken a more playful and engaged connection with my appearance !”  Anonymous client

Quick fix

I wanted to see an Image Consultant, to get an objective opinion on colours and cuts that would suit my body.  Even though I knew I was an hourglass, I still had noticed that some styles recommended for hourglass didn’t really work for me – it was good to understand why. I also wanted to know how to carry through my personal style expression into more restrictive environments such as work.

Maggi explained and clearly illustrated to a point of no doubt why some colours will work wonders for me and some shapes should be avoided.  She also very intuitively managed to understand the style tendencies of my personality which is the hardest thing to crack. It’s no good suggesting Marilyn Monroe type dress just because I’m an hourglass if my personality is completely different to that. Maggi had her ways through examples and questions to help me understand myself better. She was also very tactful regarding some of my old favourites that didn’t make the fashion cut by simply explaining what alternative would be better. And guess what it worked. She was right.

The ‘Quick Fix’ is a fantastic workshop to help you be more effective with your clothes shopping and only purchase things you really need, love and look good in. And secondly, it’s a great treat and a confidence boost. Enjoy!

I would very much recommend Maggi.

3 fab hidden men’s shops in Exeter

Sadly, more and more shops are closing in Exeter, making it harder and harder to shop.

I was asked to do a shopping trip with Tom to find much needed basic garments for his wardrobe. He was reluctant to shop in Exeter due to the choice, but after doing lots of research I found some interesting places that would work for him personally.

  1. Always in Colour – Queen Street

This is an independent men’s shop.  A contemporary space for clothing that is modern and fresh.  They have great quality brands with some fab hidden treasures.

I thought this was the right place for Tom still young at 40. Wanting to look current, as well as being creative, this shop works for his personality, I felt he needed a bit of bravery.

A quirky t-shirt that is not boring, the angles of the print work with his straight body shape and makes his chest larger.  The jersey jacket is practical, comfortable and trendy; a very easy jacket to wear on a day to day.  Finishing off with some Veja trainers that go so well with the outfit.

2. Finisterre - High Street

A shop that Tom has never been in to.

The reason I wanted to go here is due to the fantastic quality knitwear that would work for him.

Tom loved this grey jumper.  It has a modern relaxed fit, 80 per cent lambswool, a quirky ribbed funnel neck with buttons and a dropped shoulder.

After teaching him what colours work for him, the mid grey was perfect… he looks great.

I also found this gorgeous blue jumper for him.  It has wonderful texture, an unusual neckline and is made from 100% extra fine wool.  The fit is great and will be a great basic for his wardrobe.

3. Loake Shoemakers - Cathedral green

Kelvin, Manager of Loakes

I was very excited when I saw that this shop was opening in Exeter.

The one thing that is a must for a man is a pair of good quality shoes.

Every male client I have worked with, needs education on how important it is.

Why do I see so many tatty, old fashioned shoes in wardrobes!!

Here we see Tom in a gorgeous pair of Chelsea boots… a classic for guys, that is a must for winter wardrobes.  I chose a beautiful  colour brown, to work with the rest of his new purchases and a colour that is current for this season.  As Tom is 6ft 2, the boots need to be in keeping with his scale and his personality.  They were a win win all around.

Tom was impressed with Loakes having his size 12; a problem for him normally.

You can clearly see, that this is not just a pair of shoes you would buy from a normal shop.  The work and love that has gone into the Chelsea boots and the other shoes are second to none.

Kelvin and his colleague Tom has a unique service, where they provide a full fitting service, excellent product knowledge and good old fashioned customer service.  You must go in and take a look.

Here is a photo of Tom in his other purchases for the day.

Biker jacket was from Diesel, T-shirt from All Saints, Jeans 511 from Levi’s.

We had a very successful day in Exeter…. it is amazing what you can find if you know where to look!!
