The seasonal method for colour analysis

So what is the ‘seasonal method’ for a colour analysis session?

THE SEASONAL METHOD – When a range of coloured fabrics are placed across your chest it becomes immediately obvious which colours enhance your looks and make you glow and which colours drain you, doing nothing for you at all. From this test Maggi can determine which of the four seasonal colour categories you personally fall in to.

What are the four seasonal colour categories?

HAVE YOU FOUND THE RIGHT PROM DRESS?

PROM SEASON IS AROUND THE CORNER!

DO YOU HAVE YOUR DRESS?

One of the best days of your life.  A day which is so special, so you have to get it right.  How  exciting to choose the style of dress and the colour.  However, is it a fun, easy exercise or a stressful one!

I wanted to share the dresses that Daisy tried on.  All very different with the styles and colours.. but which one did she choose and which one was right for her shape, colouring and personality?

After speaking with Daisy, she wanted to have a dress that matched her personality.  With her style preference being Classic/Dramatic, she wanted a dress that had the wow factor as well as  some elegance.

Dress No1 – Daisy’s first idea was to have a white wedding dress with gloves and a tiara.

Loving this idea, she chose this one.  Technically it works for her straight body shape, being cut in a straight shape, the dress is a lovely classic shape, the neckline works for her long neck.

Why it doesn’t work – the white colour is a little harsh against her skin tone, the fabric on the lower half has movement, which doesn’t work as Daisy has no curves, but overall, it lacks the wow factor.

Dress No2 – This time we went for colour, this suits her muted skin tone.  Same shape as before, more of an evening look. The fabric is better on Daisy’s straight angular body shape.

It doesn’t have the wow factor and the neckline reduces Daisy’s bust, not very flattering.

Dress No3 – A beautiful dress, the soft pink is a gorgeous colour for Daisy.  Sadly, it doesn’t show in the photo, but the dress has a wonderful shimmer effect, making the dress look expensive. The cut is fuller, making it more wow.  It also has a lovely criss cross shaping at the back looking very sexy.

Again the neck line is not the best and it could be better!

Dress 4 – WOW! WE HAVE THE DRESS!!

It is so true, that when you know you have the dress you know… well we both did!  It is very Daisy, she wanted class, simplicity and drama  What a beautiful dress! Check out those trendy pockets. The neckline is better for Daisy, it gives her a beautiful shape, the grey/blue colour is one of her top colours in her pallet, the fabric is stiffer, matching her straight angular body shape, making the fabric sit better on the body …it has shimmer, class, drama and definitely has the wow factor.  I love the green showing through at the front of the dress.

Watch this space when we have the whole look to show you on the day!

When choosing an outfit, the first thing you need to get right is to ensure the garment represents YOU  If it isn’t you, you won’t like wearing it.  Do you know your style preference?

Colour is so important, having the right colour will make you look radiant, well and sit in harmony with your hair, skin and eye colour.

The FIT is crucial .. if this isn’t right, the dress will look wrong.  Ensure that you know your body shape, proportions, scale and other rules that you can show off or hide if you wish to, to look the best version of you.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for yesterday.
I really enjoyed the day (much to my surprise!) and found it really interesting and helpful.  It has given me a whole new awareness about how my style, colours, shape and image.
I am excited now to go shopping and fill the gap in my wardrobe! The colour wallet was really useful to have in my pocket, it gave me a lot more confidence that I was picking the right colours. I love it!
I am already starting to look at people differently and try to figure out their colour and style. I’ve been telling my friends all about it and can’t believe how enthusiastic I am about it all.
I think everyone should have a “Maggi” in their life!

10 basic style tips to clear and organise your wardrobe

A New Year wardrobe – a fantastic time to be motivated and have a big clear out, resulting in a beautiful, organised, minimalistic capsule wardrobe.

The question is where to begin!  I can hear you screaming and panicking, not knowing what to keep, what to get rid of, what works for my body and style and finally, not knowing how to put it all together.  Well, if it makes you feel better, we all feel this way.  It is so overwhelming building the perfect capsule wardrobe; it takes time and knowledge, to get it right.

So many of us, hate shopping.  Not knowing what to choose, what suits us and what colours work together.  Nothing tends to fit us properly, so we either go home with nothing or buy some random piece which doesn’t work with anything else or sits in the wardrobe with the label on; sound familiar? Hardly any of us are happy with our bodies; our confidence being affected massively.

Well, I am here to help!  Below, are some fab tips on what you need to do, before creating a perfect capsule wardrobe.  I have provided some basics to help you shift your mind set into positive thoughts.

So, are you ready to begin again?!  Let’s go!

  1. Organisation

The first thing to do, is to put all your clothes into piles on the bed.  Knitwear, trousers, skirts, t-shirts, dresses etc.

Bring all your shoes out, and put them into neat sections with flats, heels and trainers.

2. Condition

To have a good look, you need to have clothes that are in good condition.  Wearing tatty, beaten up clothes is not the answer.  Look at your garments carefully.  If they have holes or are worn, faded, stained in anyway, then put into a pile to throw or charity.

This includes going through your shoes.  If they have turned up toes, totally soleless, scratched or full of mud, get rid of them!

The garments that are right, use good quality wooden hangers and shoe trees in shoes and boots, to keep the shape and take out the moisture, keeping them fresh and good condition.

3. Comfort and Fit

One of the most important things on a day to day, is to feel comfortable. If you don’t feel this way, you won’t enjoy wearing your outfit, and it will seriously, affect your day.

You will know the garments that feel uncomfortable to wear as soon as you put them on. This could be the fabric being too stiff or itchy.  It could be the fit is too tight? It could be the other way, and the garment is too baggy, which bothers you. Go through and clear them.

If you have gained weight for whatever reason, what you need to ask yourself is, am I going to lose that stone?

If the answer is yes, then great.  When you have reached your target, then go out and purchase clothes.

Be honest with yourself!  If you are not going to lose the weight, that is fine.  Be happy with your new size and ensure that you have pieces in your wardrobe that fit you well and flatter your shape.

Don’t forget your shoes.  They are the hardest item to get right in your wardrobe.  If they feel uncomfortable, whether they are too high or they rub or cut in the wrong places, or just generally uncomfortable to wear, then give to friends, sell to a dress agency or give to charity.

You will never want to wear shoes, if they are uncomfortable.

4. Colour

Colour is key.  Wearing the right colours, especially around your face will make you look younger, fresher and radiant!  Remove all the colours from the piles of clothes that do not work for you.  By doing this, you will notice that your outfits will work together more successfully.

Also, having colour in your wardrobe and wearing colour will make you feel so much better within yourself.  Be brave, and start introducing some colours that you haven’t worn before.

If you are thinking, what colours suit me, then a colour analysis would be the answer!

5. Up to date

One of the problems I see in people’s wardrobe, is there is always clothes, shoes and accessories, that have been in there since the 1980s.  My clients give me a great tale of when they wore it and get a little excited.

If you would like an up to date modern wardrobe, you have to move on!

  • You are not at uni anymore.
  • You are not in a corporate role anymore, so why have all those clothes in the closet?
  • The dallas look with the wide padded shoulder pads is no more!
  • Shapeless trousers with the large, low waistband is not going to look good on anyone.
  • Are you saying to yourself I have had that necklace since school?

Having modern, classic pieces in your wardrobe is going to make you look fresh, young and modern.  I am sure, we all want that!!

6. Fear

If you have been good and achieved numbers 1-5 WELL DONE!!

This is great, you have done so well.  Give yourself a pat on the back.

You might have experienced many emotions whilst clearing your clothes. Some of my clients feel a failure that they did not get it right or have spent so much money on clothes that were not right.  When I first started doing this exercise, I felt the same.

I need to say that this is very normal to feel this way.  You need to remember, that you did not know!  If you haven’t had the education of what to do, then you cannot achieve the perfect capsule wardrobe.

You can now turn this round to a positive and clear out the old and start with the new you!  It feels fabulous when you get it right.

7. Memories

There will be clothes that you have in your wardrobe that mean something.  Maybe, from a loved one, funeral or wedding.  This is not going to be part of your day to day wardrobe.  A suggestion is to put these clothes in a memory box or in another wardrobe with a suit cover so they will be protected.

8. Other

You will have other clothes that again do not take part in your main capsule wardrobe. This could be gym wear, walking gear, gardening or cleaning.  These clothes can be put somewhere nice and tidy away in a drawer or another part of the house.

9. Visible

The amount of wardrobes I have gone into that have 4 garments on one hanger or hidden shoes and scarves or areas that you cannot get to.

If you cannot see the items, you will not know that they are there so you won’t be wearing them.

When you put the pieces that are right, back into your wardrobe, ensure that they can be seen.

This will also make it easier when mixing and matching your garments.

10. Style

Probably, in your wardrobe you will have a collection of clothes that are different styles.  The reason why we find it hard to put an outfit together because of the mismatch of styles that do not work together.

This is one of the most important things to get right and will make a massive difference to your clothing choices in the future.

The basics I am going to help you with, is to ask yourself some questions:

  1. Do I like to look classic, tidy and smart?
  2. Do I like to feel comfortable, casual and unstructured?
  3. Do I like to look girlie, frilly and feminine?
  4. Do I like to choose things that are a little different?
  5. Do I like to look sporty?

Whatever the answers are to the above (you can have 2 choices), this needs to relate to your clothing choices that are going to be correct in your wardrobe.

  1. = Classic  2. = Natural  3. = Romantic  4. = Dramatic  e) = Sporty

Classic, Dramatic Style Preference

For example: I am Classic, Dramatic

I like to look tailored, smart but have a little drama in my outfit and my overall look. The clues are with the cashmere classic jumper, leather trousers and my hair style.

I now know that my choice of garments need to be smart and classic, as well as having a little drama in them.  This could be in my jewellery, shoes, styles, colour and prints.

The main thing to understand is YOU HAVE TO BE YOU!  Don’t copy anyone else’s look, (unless they are the same as you) which could be a celebrity.  I love the look of Olivia Palermo.  She has the same body shape as me and style, which then works.

Go through each item and put back in your wardrobe the garments that are your correct style.  You will then notice that there is a theme going on, that you will naturally feel pleased about and feel comfortable with.  Every item that is in there, you should look at it and love it!

The aim is to STICK TO IT!

I do hope you have enjoyed my tips on how to clear a wardrobe.

Here is an example, where I did all the above for a client.  She came to me to and had an in-depth training on colour and style, that was personal to her.

At a later date, I then blitzed her wardrobe a couple of times, took her shopping and completed a perfect capsule wardrobe that was right for her.

Here we have all the correct colours, a classic, natural style preference.  All the garments work for her in the day and evening and match perfectly.

This is what Clare had to say.…. “I used to despair when choosing clothes . . . Nothing really fitted me, so many were colours that were wrong and the styles were a bit of a mish mash.

Now, it is a pleasure to open the wardrobe and see beautiful clothes hanging on the rail. Now, I have colours that suit me, styles that make the very best of my figure and there are so many combinations from just a few well chosen clothes.

I have a confidence that I haven’t had in years.”

If you would like to understand your body, colouring, and to find out where you are going right and wrong, then do look at my packages to see how I can help.

The above applies to men and women.

Make 2019 the year of change – New Year New You

New Year New You – do you really want another year of dealing with those horrible, anxious feelings when you have to face the task to clear out your wardrobe, knowing what to wear and how to put it together?

Feeling sick, having to look at the shops online and in the high street trying to choose the perfect outfit that makes you feel good and confident but not knowing where to start or what to do?

To have the confidence to be able to do this, is very hard.  We all have too many clothes in our wardrobes and there is so much choice in the shops – without the knowledge, it is pretty impossible!  It also doesn’t help with how we feel about ourselves – how are we going to look good if we don’t feel confident with our bodies and who we are.

After listening to so many of my clients, I feel this stems from childhood.  I am sure you remember other children looking attractive, having the perfect hair, make-up and being the coolest kid on the block.  The older we get, this stays with us and niggles away at the back of our heads, coming back with vengeance in certain situations, making us feel that we want to crawl in a ball and disappear.

However, as a young child, we need to remember that we were never taught the basics in self-care, what hair style suits us, understanding our bodies or our unique colouring – nothing about our DNA!  We should not expect to know the knowledge of image.

To be able to project ourselves in a positive way for people to take us seriously, to like and trust us – we have to go out there and let others see that we look the business, but most importantly, feel confident inside!!

To be the best we can in our personal and professional life is knowing our talent and being unique inside and out.

To not let these niggly excuses get in the way of others seeing how wonderful we really are.  We all feel the same in wishing we could look better – but showing off our assets and looking amazing, opens up a huge exciting world.

Results from a few of my clients…

“Thank you for your consultation with me.  You were so sensitive and encouraging.  I think you have a real gift for the work you do, helping each of us re-kindle confidence and enthusiasm in what can be a vulnerable area of our lives, often kept very private.

Thank you for helping to re-awaken a more playful and engaged connection with my appearance !”  Anonymous client

I travel to help people in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Bath, Bristol and London.

Who says shopping in Exeter is limited?

It has been the busiest year with taking people shopping. Men and women wanting to have clothes in their wardrobes that they can wear with confidence, that fit them, enhance their bodies, show off their amazing colouring and their unique personality.

This is an area of expertise that I have mastered and enjoy very much.  Finding the perfect garment, shoe or accessory is like winning the lottery.  How one thing can change a person for the better is something that you cannot describe.

Without hesitation, I would normally take my clients to Bath, Bristol and London for more choice.  However, this is sometimes not practical for my client, so more recently have been shopping in Exeter and have been surprised at the things I have found.

My aim always, is to take clients shopping to places that they have not been in before.  It makes the day more interesting and encourages them to come out of their comfort zone.

Here are some places that I would like to share with you that I have been impressed with….

The idea of this particular shopping trip was to find some pieces for my client’s Autumn/Winter wardrobe.  Coats, knitwear and trousers and jewellery were priority.

Jigsaw – High street and John Lewis

A modern, contemporary brand that suits a lot of women’s classic/natural style with good quality, fabric and colours.

If you would like to modernise yourself, then this shop is definitely worth a try.

Here we picked up some mid grey jeans, that worked with her colouring and other pieces in her wardrobe.

A great fit, slight stretch and mid rise.

Finisterre – 57 High Street, Exeter

This is a shop that I have been walking by for ages.  You need to go in and have a look.  When you understand the brand and their values, you appreciate how excellent the clothing is.

A shop for men and women that caters well if you are an outdoor person wanting warm, practical clothing that will protect you against all weathers.

My client does a lot of hiking and needed a lightweight waterproof coat with a hood.  I was so impressed with the staff’s product knowledge.  They knew every detail about the garment, which is very rare, sadly in the retail industry.  The companies I trained with back in the 80’s, were insistent you knew everything about the product/brand before assisting clients; this to me is very important.

I kept asking questions, and the lady answered everyone with confidence.  They even have a wash and reproof service to maintain the coat at little cost.

I also like the fact that the director started the company in Cornwall and the head office is still based there.

As well as my client’s needs, I am also looking for the best colour to make her look young and fresh, ensuring the coat is the correct length, the cut and fit works for her body shape, and aware of her proportions and height…. Perfect!

Crystals – 14 Gandy Street

A hidden gem that I always look in.  This is a place where you need to have a good eye to pick out that amazing piece to finish off your look.  They have lots of unique stones in all different colours and shapes which is very interesting.

For my client, I was looking for an angular, medium sized stone, based in silver with a gemstone that was soft and muted to go with a lot of her outfits.  After asking, they brought out a box of hidden pieces; I found just what I was looking for.

A beautiful labradorite stone…. a unique statement piece.

As you can see from the photo, a wonderful one off that my client now wears all the time.  She wore no jewellery before, due to lack of knowledge and no how.

The most important thing when working with a client, is to find out who they are.  This takes a lot of practice, however, when you have it, it is gold!  Once you have this mastered, you can go anywhere and find something, that is them to a tee.

Orvis – Barbour Outlet Cathedral Close

Another shop that my clients have walked by.

So many people say to me…. but there is nothing out there that fits me.  Where do I go to find….

Well, you need to go in to these places and take a look!

On our list was a lightweight jacket that had to be stylish for day wear, modern, classic and simple.

Everything was perfect for my client, she looked great.  Even better, upstairs in the section of Barbour, it is an outlet, so was a good price.

An excellent quality classic that will never date.

I also saw a gilet in her size and colour.  This is a great piece to wear now for the in between weather that keeps your body warm, but not too hot.

Something that she would not consider, but after trying, absolutely loved it.

Whilst my client was purchasing her coats, looking with my beady eye, what did I find…. 1 pair of blue moleskin trousers in her size in the sale!!

The fit is fantastic.  My client’s original jeans were old fashioned and not a great fit.  She has a great figure, and needs to show it off.  So many people wear jeans and a jumper.  They desperately want to get away from this, but they don’t know how.

Moleskin trousers are beautiful, classic, different and warm, which works well in the chilly days.  I liked them so much, after doing an online shopping for the missing pieces, I found the same trouser on line in another soft colour that will go with the ideal capsule wardrobe.

Edinburgh Woolen Mill – Cathedral Close

Yes, this shop sadly is still dated, but has good priced cashmere jumpers with unusual different colours and necklines.  Marks & Spencer is not only the place for cashmere.

I was looking for a beautiful v-neck cashmere jumper with a fresh colour to liven up her winter wardrobe.  Again, I found it!

This blue is fantastic against her skin tone and her gorgeous blue eyes.  It also matches well with the barbour coats above and other items in her wardrobe.  I love it!

While I was there, I found a wonderful cashmere scarf with a modern check with colours that worked with the coats and the jumper.  Not only is the check on trend this season, but also complements her angular facial features; what a find.

John Lewis –

It is brilliant now that we have a modern department store in Exeter.  Sometimes, I just shop here with my clients, find what I am looking for and do not have the need to go elsewhere.

Yes, I agree with the majority, I so wish there was more stock in each concession, but it is worth shopping here.

We were wanting a trench coat.  This can be worn in the day for a more stylish look, but also can be worn to see clients for a more corporate feel to meet my client’s needs.

There are so many styles of trench coats, which can be tricky.  As my client was very classic, she wanted a coat that was very plain, hardly any detail, but also was not too bulky with lots going on.

With the above information, Hobbs, ticked the boxes.  Usually, I would not choose this colour for clients, as it does tend to wash out skin tones.

However, the more we looked at the colour; it was right. It had a minky, pink tone to it, which worked so well with her cool brown hair and the french blue tones and grey with clothing.

My client has a straight body shape and is 5ft 5inches tall.  The coat is the correct length, the fabric is right for her body shape and purchasing a classic white shirt finishes off the classy look.

Well, I hope this information has opened your eyes when shopping in Exeter.  We had such an amazing day and found some great items for the much needed capsule wardrobe. They all work together, and will last my client a long time and will not date.

If you want to hear what my client has said with working with me, take a look.

Do the celebrities always get it right?

Why do we assume that celebrities get it right with their style and colour?  We see them all the time on social media and in photoshoots wearing outfits chosen by themselves or by a stylist.

As I have worked with so many people over the years, I find it interesting how sometimes they are spot on with their colouring and chosen outfit and how too, they seriously get it so wrong.  I love having the power and vision on how I can see the difference when they do get it right; they look so much more connected and powerful.

I think it is extremely valuable and helpful getting inspiration from the celebs on what they wear, but would like everyone to know, that you have to be yourself and embrace your personality, unique body and amazing colouring.  All of us are different in lots of ways.  Don’t be afraid to let others see how great you are.

Here are some examples on mainly colour of before and afters.  I do hope that you can see the difference with the celebrities that we see all the time on tv, what happens to their look overall, when they are wearing the wrong and the right colours.

BEFORE – Holly Willoughby has a soft, cool colouring.  She has chosen to wear a black dress and matching black eyeliner.

Although, the eyeliner links well with the dress, this colour is making her look hard and contrasty.

The black colour provides shadows across the face and hair, sadly making her look darker than she naturally is.  The colour is too strong for her.

AFTER – What a difference.  Holly is surrounded by soft, cool muted colours; not a black in sight.  All the colours in the photo suit her skin and hair tone much better.  Her make-up doesn’t look so hard, it works well with her ivory dress, linking in beautifully with the soft blue colour behind.  Overall, she looks warm, soft and approachable.  Gorgeous!

BEFORE – Here we see talented Eddie Redmayne.  Complete opposite to Holly, he has warm, freckly skin with gorgeous deep warm toned hair.

Unless you are aware of how Eddie looks, you would be totally unaware of his warm coloured hair and skin with this cool blue which is surrounding him.

He looks so cold; look at his lips!  What a shame!

AFTER – Love this picture…. what a difference.  The colour of the bricks in the background and the warm burnt orange jumper link really well with Eddie’s natural colouring.  Now you can see his conker coloured hair and his warm skin tone.  A rare colouring to see; great to work with.  Eddie looks very well, age appropriate ; I particularly like the jumper style and how the neckline works with his long neck.

BEFORE – Jessica Chastain is an American actress.  She has fair skin and beautiful red hair.

Although, she is similar to Eddie Redmayne, the difference is paler skin and a lighter hair base.

Jessica’s hair has some brightness to it.  The pink dress and lipstick that she is wearing is a blue pink, not a warm yellow pink, making her look cold.

The light colour works with her light hair, but is too cool, which does not match with her skin tone.

AFTER – Here we can see how Jessica has chosen a warm toned coloured dress with the gold detail and gold earrings to link with her light, bright warm coloured hair and skin.  Can you see how she has connected everything together.  Again, a very rare colouring; I do get very excited when I see this colouring.  Beautiful unusual colours; absolutely stunning!

BEFORE – Lastly, we have James Bond – Pierce Brosnan.

This is very common to see with most people.  Beige is a safe colour, but pretty boring and non-descript.

It doesn’t help with the suit not fitting him properly.  Pierce naturally has very dark hair, with this beige colouring and the blended tie, makes him disappear.

You would not notice him in a room.  He has little presence.

AFTER – Ok, now you would definitely spot this man in a room.  He looks sharp, slick and someone who knows what he is doing.  The angled hair cut works with his angled features on his face.  The contrasting colours link well with his cool colouring and dark hair.  Basic theory, the suit fits him very well.  Not only has he chosen the right colour suit and shirt, but finished it off with a red striking tie that makes him look the part.  Wow!

What about YOU!  Have you really looked in the mirror properly at yourself each day when you are choosing your outfit?

Are you looking cold, boring, blended, hard and untrustworthy?

Maybe, it is time to do something about it. https://maggigreen.co.uk/executive/
