8 basic tips to declutter your wardrobe ready for a perfect capsule wardrobe – stage one

Finally, we have some sun!  Now is a good opportunity to have a good declutter for your summer wardrobe.

The question is, where to begin! I can hear you screaming and panicking, not knowing what to keep, what to get rid of, what works for my body and style and finally, not knowing how to put it all together.  Well, if it makes you feel better, we all feel this way.  It is so overwhelming building the perfect capsule wardrobe; it takes time and knowledge, to get it right.

So many of us, hate shopping.  Not knowing what to choose, what suits us and what colours work together.  Nothing tends to fit us properly, so we either go home with nothing or buy some random piece which doesn’t work with anything else or sits in the wardrobe with the label on; sound familiar?  Hardly any of us are happy with our bodies; our confidence being affected massively.

Well, I am here to help!  Below, are some fab tips on what you need to do before creating a perfect capsule wardrobe.  I have provided some basics to help you shift your mind set into positive thoughts. Before you do anything, take a photo of what your wardrobe looks like now.  This is so powerful to look back at in 6 months time.

So, are you ready to begin again?! Let’s go!

1. Organisation

The first thing to do, is to put all your clothes into piles on the bed.

Knitwear, trousers, skirts, t-shirts, dresses etc.

Bring all your shoes out, and put them into neat sections with flats, heels and trainers.

2. Condition

To have a polished look, you need to have clothes that are in good condition.  Wearing tatty, beaten up clothes is not the answer.  Look at your garments carefully.  If they have holes or are worn, faded, stained in anyway, then put into a pile to throw or charity.

This includes going through your shoes.  If they have turned up toes, totally soleless, scratched or full of mud, get rid of them!

The garments that are ok to keep, use good quality wooden hangers and shoe trees in shoes and boots, to keep the shape and take out the moisture, keeping them fresh and good condition.

3. Comfort and Fit

One of the most important things on a day to day, is to feel comfortable. If you don’t feel this way, you won’t enjoy wearing your outfits, and it will seriously, affect your day.

You will know the garments that feel uncomfortable to wear as soon as you put them on.  This could be the fabric being too stiff or itchy.  It could be the fit is too tight? It could be the other way, and the garment is too baggy, which bothers you. Go through and clear them.

If you have gained weight for whatever reason, what you need to ask yourself is, am I going to lose that stone?

If the answer is yes, then great.  When you have reached your target, then go out and purchase clothes.

Be honest with yourself!  If you are not going to lose the weight, that is fine.  Be happy with your new size and ensure that you have pieces in your wardrobe that fit you well and flatter your shape.

Don’t forget your shoes.  They are the hardest item to get right in your wardrobe.  If they feel uncomfortable, whether they are too high or they rub or cut in the wrong places, or just generally uncomfortable to wear, then give to friends, sell to a dress agency or give to charity.

You will never want to wear shoes, if they are uncomfortable.

4. Up to date

One of the problems I see in people’s wardrobe, is there is always clothes, shoes and accessories, that have been in there since the 1980’s. My clients give me a great tale of when they wore it and get a little excited.

If you would like an up to date modern wardrobe, you have to move on!

  • You are not at university anymore.
  • You are not in a corporate role anymore, so why have all those clothes in the closet?
  • The Dallas look with the wide padded shoulder pads is no more!
  • Shapeless trousers with the large, low waistband is not going to look good on anyone.
  • Are you saying to yourself I have had that necklace since school?

Having modern, classic pieces in your wardrobe is going to make you look fresh, young and modern.  I am sure, we all want that!!

5. Fear

If you have been good and achieved numbers 1-5 WELL DONE!!

This is great, you have done so well.  Give yourself a pat on the back.

You might have experienced many emotions whilst clearing your clothes. Some of my clients feel a failure that they did not get it right or have spent so much money on clothes that were not right.  When I first started doing this exercise, I felt the same.

I need to say that this is very normal to feel this way.  You need to remember, that you didn’t know!  If you haven’t had the education of what to do, then you cannot achieve the perfect capsule wardrobe.

You can now turn this round to a positive and clear out the old and start with the new you!  It feels fabulous when you get it right.

6. Memories

There will be clothes that you have in your wardrobe that mean something.  Maybe, from a loved one, funeral or wedding.  This is not going to be part of your day to day wardrobe.  A suggestion is to put these clothes in a memory box or in another wardrobe with a suit cover so they will be protected.

7. Other

You will have other clothes that again do not take part in your main capsule wardrobe.  This could be gym wear, walking gear, gardening or cleaning.  These clothes can be put somewhere nice and tidy away in a drawer or another part of the house.

8. Visible

The amount of wardrobes I have gone into that have 4 garments on one hanger or hidden shoes and scarves or areas that you cannot get to.

If you cannot see the items, you will not know that they are there so you won’t be wearing them.

When you put the pieces that are right, back into your wardrobe, ensure that they can be seen.

This will also make it easier when mixing and matching your garments.

By doing the above, will help your mind feel less overwhelmed before getting to the stage of knowing your colours, style and body shape. We all need to do the above twice a year, for our clothes and wardrobes to be updated and fresh.

The next stage of your capsule wardrobe is to inject colours that are right for your skin tone, hair and eyes, then look at your clothes and keep the ones that project your style preference.  We are then looking at your body shape.

TOP TIPS ON HOW TO LOOK GOOD ON VALENTINE’S DAY

Danny and Sandy from Grease

Here are my TOP TIPS ON HOW TO LOOK GOOD ON VALENTINE’S DAY.  With VALENTINE’S DAY just around the corner, it’s time to start prepping the ultimate outfit for your date.  First impressions are everything!

Ensure the outfit fits the purpose of the date

Select an outfit that suits the occasion.  If you are going out in the day that is less formal, then wear an outfit that is smart/casual.  If you are going out for an evening meal, then the outfit needs to step up to a more smarter outfit.

Be yourself

Wear clothes that show off your personality.  Image is a form of communication – let your date see who you truly are.  Do not choose an outfit because it looks good on the mannequin, or seen on someone else, the outfit needs to reflect you.

Make sure the outfit fits well

To look good; the fit is key.  The garments need to skim the body – not too tight or too baggy.  You don’t want to look a sloppy joe.

Be modern and up to date

Your date will sum you up in seconds.  Ensure that your overall look, including your hair and accessories are modern and up to date.  Examples are: a current hair cut, (not loads of product in your hair) modern clothes (not from the 80’s) not forgetting the shoes.

Don’t over do it

There is nothing worse than trying to over do it.  Wearing a white suit, shiny tie, short red dress, showing lots of cleavage, lots of make-up, and covered in perfume is not a good idea.  Your date will be concentrating on what you are wearing (in the wrong way) instead of listening to what you are saying.

Go for softer colours

Choosing the correct colours for the date is key.  If you want to impress your date, it is not a good idea wearing overall black or wearing harsh, serious colours like black, white and red.  You want to come across as kind, approachable and trustworthy – so wearing softer colours like pink, lilac and grey (if you are cool) and off white, aqua and natural colours (if you are warm) will make a massive difference.

Make an effort

Impress your date and think of the basics.  I know it sounds silly, but not a lot of people think of little basic things like: washing your hair, blow drying and putting some product in to finish off your style.  Clean clothes and clean you.  Smooth skin with applying a moisturiser and light perfume.

Smile and be confident

Stand up tall, look confident and smile.  Look at your date in the eye and give them a big happy smile; it’s easy and makes a massive difference.  You might be shaking inside, but learning how to calm your body down, breathe and relax will help.  Most of all, enjoy your time together and have fun!

Don’t go by trend – your clothes need to fit you properly.. the FIT is crucial!

When choosing a garment, we tend to get excited when we see something that we love. The colour, the style… it is just what you are looking for.
However, what you need to think about is the FIT!
Susan is wearing a beautiful red blouse, she is going by some of her rules for her body and style preference, but is following the trend and not thinking about one of the most important things.. the FIT.

The blouse is way oversized, making her look larger than she actually is.

AFTER ….

Look at the green blouse, can you see the garment fits her so much better. She looks slimmer!

Check out all the things in your wardrobe… the FIT is crucial. If your clothes do not fit you properly, you will feel uncomfortable , you won’t enjoy wearing them and sadly, you are not making the best of yourself.  You probably later on, will decide to buy another top because of this, so wasted your money!

HAVE YOU FOUND THE RIGHT PROM DRESS?

PROM SEASON IS AROUND THE CORNER!

DO YOU HAVE YOUR DRESS?

One of the best days of your life.  A day which is so special, so you have to get it right.  How  exciting to choose the style of dress and the colour.  However, is it a fun, easy exercise or a stressful one!

I wanted to share the dresses that Daisy tried on.  All very different with the styles and colours.. but which one did she choose and which one was right for her shape, colouring and personality?

After speaking with Daisy, she wanted to have a dress that matched her personality.  With her style preference being Classic/Dramatic, she wanted a dress that had the wow factor as well as  some elegance.

Dress No1 – Daisy’s first idea was to have a white wedding dress with gloves and a tiara.

Loving this idea, she chose this one.  Technically it works for her straight body shape, being cut in a straight shape, the dress is a lovely classic shape, the neckline works for her long neck.

Why it doesn’t work – the white colour is a little harsh against her skin tone, the fabric on the lower half has movement, which doesn’t work as Daisy has no curves, but overall, it lacks the wow factor.

Dress No2 – This time we went for colour, this suits her muted skin tone.  Same shape as before, more of an evening look. The fabric is better on Daisy’s straight angular body shape.

It doesn’t have the wow factor and the neckline reduces Daisy’s bust, not very flattering.

Dress No3 – A beautiful dress, the soft pink is a gorgeous colour for Daisy.  Sadly, it doesn’t show in the photo, but the dress has a wonderful shimmer effect, making the dress look expensive. The cut is fuller, making it more wow.  It also has a lovely criss cross shaping at the back looking very sexy.

Again the neck line is not the best and it could be better!

Dress 4 – WOW! WE HAVE THE DRESS!!

It is so true, that when you know you have the dress you know… well we both did!  It is very Daisy, she wanted class, simplicity and drama  What a beautiful dress! Check out those trendy pockets. The neckline is better for Daisy, it gives her a beautiful shape, the grey/blue colour is one of her top colours in her pallet, the fabric is stiffer, matching her straight angular body shape, making the fabric sit better on the body …it has shimmer, class, drama and definitely has the wow factor.  I love the green showing through at the front of the dress.

Watch this space when we have the whole look to show you on the day!

When choosing an outfit, the first thing you need to get right is to ensure the garment represents YOU  If it isn’t you, you won’t like wearing it.  Do you know your style preference?

Colour is so important, having the right colour will make you look radiant, well and sit in harmony with your hair, skin and eye colour.

The FIT is crucial .. if this isn’t right, the dress will look wrong.  Ensure that you know your body shape, proportions, scale and other rules that you can show off or hide if you wish to, to look the best version of you.

I just want to say a big thank you for spending time with me yesterday to help me with my body shape and to focus my mind on my colours which I have evidently been neglecting!

You have given me a great point of reference for sorting out my wardrobe and I now feel a lot more confident as to the direction I need to go.  I shall enjoy looking for those lovely spring colours and realise too how my body shape affects everything I wear.

Thank you for your time, patience and fun as we tackled what is quite a life-changing experience but you made it enjoyable.  I loved your encouragement, enthusiasm and personal attention - it’s a real treat to have someone interested in how we look to the outside world!

Carolyn Mason    Winkleigh, North Devon

I met Maggi at an event and was impressed with some of case studies so decided to make an appointment. I was excited, but maybe a little apprehensive in advance of my visit to her, but I shouldn’t have worried.

Maggi is a lovely lady who makes you feel at ease straight away. I had a wonderful session with her, found it very enlightening and really enjoyed it.

I have had a sort out of my wardrobe and look at the contents with new eyes now and have got rid of some clothes that really don’t suit me.

Since my visit I now have the confidence when shopping I now say ‘no’ to items I know won’t suit me and have bought a lovely dress that is a size smaller than I would have bought before, so it fits snugly and it looks fab!

Thank you so much Maggi for your support and guidance – you’re amazing!

What neckline is best for a small bust

There are so many different necklines out there… what neckline is best for a small bust?

Here we have a client that I have been working with in Cornwall, Devon.  I was asked to go through her wardrobe, clearing out the wrong items and keeping the best pieces that work for her body, personality and age.  I love looking at different garments in people’s wardrobes, trying them on to see how they can change the body shape, proportions in a good and bad way.

I wanted to share with you three red tops with different necklines and how this changes the bust and neck area.

My client has a medium length neck is in the age of 60’s and a small bust.  She is happy with her bust size, but does not want to make her bust area smaller.

  1. DEEP SCOOP – Here we can see how low the neckline is, which makes the bust smaller.  There is too much flesh showing for her age, but does elongate her neck.

2. DEEP V-NECK – Another red top with a deep narrow v-neck.  Again this neckline draws down to her bust, making the bust smaller.  This is not the best option.  It does make her neck longer, which is a nice asset to have.

3. ROUND NECK – This neckline is the best one for my client.  The neckline is higher up which makes the best look bigger.  The scoop is much smaller, this sits well on the body.  Another bonus is showing some flesh, elongating the neck area.

Now we both know what neckline works for my client.  Seeing the tops on and showing my client in the mirror makes it real and believable.

To make her wardrobe more interesting, she would benefit with more tops with this neckline in more colours which suit her skin tone.

A few basic good quality jerseys and knitwear will be excellent staple items to form a fab capsule wardrobe.  Saving money in the long run and making my client feel confident and walking tall.

Hair to cancer charity “Little Princess”

I was very privileged to be asked by my fab tailor Vanessa, to be part of her wonderful story. She decided to grow her glorious locks to then give the majority to Little Princess charity for children. When dealing with clients that have had cancer, they feel exposed and uncomfortable wearing a wig with synthetic hair and want to feel normal as possible.

  • Here are the major stages we took – a remarkable transformation to Vanessa, I believe for the better.

Stage 1 – here is Vanessa with her amazing thick, long hair.

I gave Vanessa a consultation, deciding what hair style would be best for her.

This included – analyising her face shape, facial features, personality and scale. All these little things are very important to ensure the end result is right for Vanessa.

Stage 2

Putting her hair into pony tails about to do the scary thing and cut it off. The hair had to be a certain length to use to make a wig.

We were both very nervous and very excited about to make a massive change.

Stage 3

We have done it!

Vanessa holding her pony tails…

Now for the huge restyle… short hair here we come!!

Stage 4 -

The new Vanessa

Wow, she looks amazing. I so much prefer the new hair style than the long hair.

Vanessa is a true dramatic, her style is fantastic, that is so her. She is creative inside and truly shows off her talent on the outside too. The new hairstyle looks vintage, that matches her look.

Career upgrade – Vanessa also wanted to improve the way she was being perceived. When you reach the end of your 20’s, early 30’s you need to be aware of looking age appropriate and more professional. You tend to stay with your look from school/university and need to move on with what what is going on today. This is a common problem, due to confidence and know how.

Hair – by providing layers on top of her head, makes Vanessa look taller, which was a focus. The layers also give width to the sides of the head, improving her face shape.

We wanted to elongate her neck, which has worked bringing the length up away from the neck.

Her new hairstyle has movement and curves which match her contoured facial features, this is an area that not many people are aware of.

Finally, we put some cool, bright lipstick on to match her stunning colour characteristics.

We were both very happy with the results. A very brave thing for Vanessa to do – but an amazing story! I very much enjoyed being part of it.

How to look good on Valentines day

With Valentines Day just around the corner, it’s time to start prepping the ultimate outfit for your date.  First impressions are everything!

Here are my top tips on how to look good:

  1. Ensure the outfit fits the purpose of the date

Select an outfit that suits the occasion.  If you are going out in the day that is less formal, then wear an outfit that is smart/casual.  If you are going out for an evening meal, then the outfit needs to step up to a more smarter outfit.

Before – my client is wearing an outfit in the day, which is too formal in colour and look. Also the clothes are too baggy.

2. Be yourself

Wear clothes that show off your personality.  Image is a form of communication – let your date see who you truly are.  Do not choose an outfit because it looks good on the mannequin, or seen on someone else, the outfit needs to reflect you.

  1. Make sure the outfit fits well

There is nothing worse than wearing baggy clothes; looking like sloppy joe.  To look good in an outfit, the garments need to skim the body – not too tight or baggy.  Whatever your size, show off your shape.  It also looks like you have bothered.

After – A great outfit that reflects my client’s personality, is modern and a great fit.

  1. Be modern and up to date

Your date will sum you up in seconds.  Ensure that your overall look, including your hair and accessories are modern and up to date.  Examples are: a current hair cut, (no hairspray) modern clothes (not from the 80’s) not forgetting the shoes.

  1. Don’t over do it

There is nothing worse than trying to over do it.  Wearing a white suit, blingy tie, short red dress, showing lots of cleavage, lots of make-up, and covered in perfume is not a good idea.  Your date will be concentrating on what you are wearing (in the wrong way) instead of listening to what you are saying.

After – a great example of an evening outfit. He looks smart, handsome, happy with his lady love. The idea was to slim the top half and shorten his long legs to balance.

  1. Go for kinder colours

Choosing the correct colours for the date is key.  If you want to impress your date, it is not a good idea wearing black from head to toe, or wearing harsh, serious colours.  You want to come across as kind, approachable and trustworthy – so wearing softer colours like pink, lilac and grey (if you are cool) and off white, aqua and natural colours (if you are warm) will make a massive difference.

  1. Make an effort

Impress your date and think of the basics.  I know it sounds silly, but not a lot of people think of little things like: having a shower, washing hair, blow drying and putting some product in to finish off your style. Wearing clean clothes that are pressed and pristine.  Smooth skin with applying a moisturiser and light perfume.

  1. Smile and be confident

Stand up tall, look confident and smile.  Look at your date in the eye and give them a big happy smile.  It’s easy and makes a massive difference.  You might be shaking inside, but learning how to calm your body down, breathe and relax will help.  Most of all, enjoy your time together and have fun.

10 basic style tips to clear and organise your wardrobe

A New Year wardrobe – a fantastic time to be motivated and have a big clear out, resulting in a beautiful, organised, minimalistic capsule wardrobe.

The question is where to begin!

Below, are some fab tips on what you need to do, before creating a perfect capsule wardrobe.  I have provided some basics to help you shift your mind set into positive thoughts.

2. Condition

To have a good look, you need to have clothes that are in good condition.

The garments that are right, use good quality wooden hangers and shoe trees in shoes and boots, to keep the shape and take out the moisture, keeping them fresh and good condition.

3. Comfort and Fit

One of the most important things on a day to day, is to feel comfortable. If you don’t feel this way, you won’t enjoy wearing your outfit, and it will seriously, affect your day.

4. Colour

Colour is key.  Wearing the right colours, especially around your face will make you look younger, fresher and radiant!  Remove all the colours from the piles of clothes that do not work for you.  By doing this, you will notice that your outfits will work together more successfully.

Also, having colour in your wardrobe and wearing colour will make you feel so much better within yourself.  Be brave, and start introducing some colours that you haven’t worn before.

If you are thinking, what colours suit me, then a colour analysis would be the answer!

5. Up to date

One of the problems I see in people’s wardrobe, is there is always clothes, shoes and accessories, that have been in there since the 1980s.  My clients give me a great tale of when they wore it and get a little excited.

If you would like an up to date modern wardrobe, you have to move on!

  • You are not at uni anymore.

You need to remember, that you did not know!  If you haven’t had the education of what to do, then you cannot achieve the perfect capsule wardrobe.

You can now turn this round to a positive and clear out the old and start with the new you!  It feels fabulous when you get it right.

7. Memories

There will be clothes that you have in your wardrobe that mean something.  Maybe, from a loved one, funeral or wedding.  This is not going to be part of your day to day wardrobe.  A suggestion is to put these clothes in a memory box or in another wardrobe with a suit cover so they will be protected.

8. Other

You will have other clothes that again do not take part in your main capsule wardrobe. This could be gym wear, walking gear, gardening or cleaning.  These clothes can be put somewhere nice and tidy away in a drawer or another part of the house.

10. Style

Probably, in your wardrobe you will have a collection of clothes that are different styles.  The reason why we find it hard to put an outfit together because of the mismatch of styles that do not work together.

This is one of the most important things to get right and will make a massive difference to your clothing choices in the future.

The basics I am going to help you with, is to ask yourself some questions:

  1. Do I like to look classic, tidy and smart?
  2. Do I like to feel comfortable, casual and unstructured?
  3. Do I like to look girlie, frilly and feminine?
  4. Do I like to choose things that are a little different?
  5. Do I like to look sporty?

Whatever the answers are to the above (you can have 2 choices), this needs to relate to your clothing choices that are going to be correct in your wardrobe.

  1. = Classic  2. = Natural  3. = Romantic  4. = Dramatic  e) = Sporty

Classic, Dramatic Style Preference

For example: I am Classic, Dramatic

I like to look tailored, smart but have a little drama in my outfit and my overall look. The clues are with the cashmere classic jumper, leather trousers and my hair style.

I now know that my choice of garments need to be smart and classic, as well as having a little drama in them.  This could be in my jewellery, shoes, styles, colour and prints.

The main thing to understand is YOU HAVE TO BE YOU!  Don’t copy anyone else’s look, (unless they are the same as you) which could be a celebrity.  I love the look of Olivia Palermo.  She has the same body shape as me and style, which then works.

Go through each item and put back in your wardrobe the garments that are your correct style.  You will then notice that there is a theme going on, that you will naturally feel pleased about and feel comfortable with.  Every item that is in there, you should look at it and love it!

The aim is to STICK TO IT!

I do hope you have enjoyed my tips on how to clear a wardrobe.

Here is an example, where I did all the above for a client.  She came to me to and had an in-depth training on colour and style, that was personal to her.

At a later date, I then blitzed her wardrobe a couple of times, took her shopping and completed a perfect capsule wardrobe that was right for her.

Here we have all the correct colours, a classic, natural style preference.  All the garments work for her in the day and evening and match perfectly.

This is what Clare had to say.…. “I used to despair when choosing clothes . . . Nothing really fitted me, so many were colours that were wrong and the styles were a bit of a mish mash.

Now, it is a pleasure to open the wardrobe and see beautiful clothes hanging on the rail. Now, I have colours that suit me, styles that make the very best of my figure and there are so many combinations from just a few well chosen clothes.

I have a confidence that I haven’t had in years.”

If you would like to understand your body, colouring, and to find out where you are going right and wrong, then do look at my packages to see how I can help.

The above applies to men and women.
